The latest version of Sony ACID Pro 7 Free.A new study shows two of the most common cancer drugs interfere with the body’s hormone system in much the same way as marijuana.
A study conducted at the University of Hawaii shows that the big pills called Tamoxifen and Arimidex block the action of hormones like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. That means they may pose a risk for breast cancer survivors.
The study is known as a “risk-benefit” analysis.
University of Hawaii scientists studied the effects of using Tamoxifen or Arimidex for five years. They found that the longer you use them, the greater the risk for a different, but serious, condition called abnormal bone growth.
“Tamoxifen is well-known as a breast cancer drug, but there is also growing awareness that it can have side effects that are relevant to bone health,” said Timothy Peters, lead author of the study and a researcher in the Graduate Program in Toxicology at the UH Mānoa College of Pharmacy. “Our study reinforces this and suggests that, in some circumstances, it may be a good thing to use tamoxifen for a longer period of time, so there is enough time to monitor these side effects.”
Peters warns that estrogen and testosterone levels may be higher for people who take both Tamoxifen and Arimidex.
“This is a very important work. It is important because they are both often used for breast cancer treatment and it’s important for women to know that these drugs may have some extra effects,” said Dr. Maria S. Belfort-Rodriguez, professor of the College of Medicine and leader of the UH Mānoa Molecular Oncology Research Program at the UH Cancer Research Center. “We are still in the beginning phases of this work, and we’d love to have more funding in order to do some long-term research.”
